I'm delighted to have played a small part in bringing this incredible mural by Elle Kuziopa to life as part of the Benewquay arts festival. The artwork is based on a photo I shot, and as you can see, the resemblance is mind-blowing.
Elle’s creative vision was brought to life with the help of producer Jack Tierney from Slapdash Studio, who set up the shot with actor Derek Frood in an abandoned building in Newquay.
My challenge was capturing their vision in candlelight and perfecting the colours and composition in post-production.
The photo was then made into an outline and printed out full size onto 8 one-metre high rolls and "pounced". This technique has been used for centuries, including by Michelango in the Sistene Chapel. Holes are pierced along the outlines and then the sheets are placed on the wall. By spray painting through the holes an outline is created on the wall. Elle and Jack then spent a week completing the mural.
Watching Elle translate a small photo onto a massive wall left me in awe—it truly took my breath away when I saw the final mural. The artistry involved in creating the detail in the nets and the fisher's hair and beard is simply stunning.
Such a brilliant addition to Newquay’s nascent street art scene. This is the second mural completed, with another to follow in November and more next year, creating a mural trail around Newquay. The project has been funded by Experience Newquay.
